Gomez was traded to Montreal along with Tom Pyatt and Michael Busto for Chris Higgins, Ryan McDonagh, Pavel Valentenko and Doug Janik.
This is a great move for the Rangers because it opens them up to acquire better, cheaper talent. Meanwhile, Gomez steps in as the top line center in Montreal, which should help them out.
I had just heard today that Montreal was in on the Sedin sweepstakes... I'm guessing that's not true anymore.

Habs seem like a desperate team and this trade seems to symbolize a move of a GM just looking for any options by taking a pretty significant risk in Gomez. Gomez will have an immense amount of pressure. i hope he pulls thru because he was one of the better centers in the league as a New Jersey Devil.

I think the Habs got fleeced. Gomez's numbers are only slightly better than that of Koivu, and Koivu could have been had for probably $3 million less.
On top of that, the Rangers get away with the best prospect in the deal. So they unload one of the worst contracts in the league and get the better prospect....?
The Rangers get the cap space to sign a big name (or trade for Heatley), a highly touted D-man and Higgins while the Canadians get one of the worst contracts in the league. I would be throwing myself off a bridge if I was a Habs fan.

Gomez better start learning french lol...
I like gomez but that price tag is so pre cap era. Reminds me of that Yashin contract but at least that was pre cap nhl. Also is gomez really all that better than koivu? This also means Habs have no chance at vinny correct? Wow looks bad for habs fans.

This is a bad trade for the Habs. Even if it was just Higgins for Gomez. I'd rather have Higgins. He may not put up better numbers, but neither are consistent. At least Higgins is a bit younger.
Giving up the better prospect for that horrendous salary is just a bad move. Not sure what the Habs are trying to put together up there. Adding Cammy made this interesting, but that team is still a bit awkward until they get Koivu and probably Kovalov signed.
