I'm happy to see Torts getting another shot in the NHL. He certainly is a worthy of it. I wonder if the Lightning are going to seek some kind of compensation, in the form of a draft pick or something. Since Torts is still technically under contract?
And you're right about Torts having a history of benching goalies, however, there is no denying that Henrik Lundqvist is the only reason the Rangers are in the position to make the playoffs. I doubt hes going to go in there benching King Henrik.

I think the Lightening get out of paying Tots the money from that contract and there is no compensation. Not 100% sure on this, but former coaches are frequently hired while still under contract and I've never heard of compensation.

seems to me that getting out of the contract is compensation enough, eh? especially in tight economic times, saving a few million bucks a year is typically a favorable position to be in.
but i do think they could demand some kind of compensation. doubt it would be picks or players, but maybe money. maybe ask the rangers to backpay torts' salary from this entire season? something like that.

I just heard this on the news. All 4 teams who started their seasons in Europe have made coaching changes: Rangers, Lightning, Senators and Penguins. Just a coincidence? Or did the start in Europe lead to a slow start they couldn't recover from?

Well, it may just be a coincidence. I mean the Rangers came out of the gates flying, going 10-2-1 in their first 13 games and had one of the best records in the league until around late Dec. early Jan.
Rangers now have only won 4 of their last 15 games, so something has obviously changed with them. The Lightning and Sens have been pretty awful all season, while the Pens have been up and down for the most part.
I think its an interesting story, one that I expect to be explored more in the future, but I think its just a coincidence really.

pens haven't really been up and down. like the rangers, they got off to a great start -- one of the best in franchise history. then they had a terrible 2 months. now
so two teams come out hot, sputter out suddenly, and fire their coach. And two teams struggle to get hot, and fire their coaches.
very interesting.

Also I forgot the '?' in my post originally. this move is not official yet. just speculation from solid sources like TSN. They wouldnt report it if it werent happening I dont think.

it's pretty much official now.
if nhl.com reports it, it's 99.9% a sure thing.

Its been official since sometime late in the evening last night, but there was much doubt out there for a while, and Bob McKenzie on TSN last night speculated that the Rangers could face some kind of tampering charges from the Lightning at some point. But Torts was at the Rangers practice this morning, everything is in place now it seems.
