The Canucks have acquired 3 defensemen today, Mathieu Schneider, Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich. Schneider is rumoured to have signed for $1.5 to $2 million, but no terms have been released. Ehrhoff and Lukowich were acquired in exchange for prospects Patrick White and Daniel Rahimi. www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/08/28/canucks_sign_scnheider/www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/08/28/ehrhoff_trade_canucks/As a Canucks fan I am loving the Ehrhoff deal. Sure it cost us a first rounder, but White was seen as a stretch pick when he was drafted, and his stock has steadily declined since he was picked 27th overall in 2007. Rahimi was a 3rd rounder in 06, and could make the NHL, but I don't think he'll be more than a 6th or 7th d-man. I'm not sure why Gillis needed to pick up Schneider after getting Ehrhoff though. If Schneider is getting $2 million then his signing puts the Canucks over the cap. I wonder what else Gillis has in the works. Picking up Lukowich might make Shane O'Brian expendable.

yeah there definitely seems to be 1 too many NHL defensemen in Vancouver now. It'll be really interesting to see if the dominoes start to fall now.
San Jose is also left fairly understaffed. I'm interested to see if they go for some of the less-valued FA defensemen that are still out there.

Ehrhoff is ideally a #5 D man and is way overpaid. He's best when he doesn't have to worry about trying to score. He is a very good skater and has a cannon of a shot. Unfortunately he misses the net more often than not. All that being said, the Sharks got nothing in return. This was clearly a salary dump for something bigger. Even so, Doug Wilson could have at least got SOME value for Ehrhoff.
The Sharks do have some good young D men that are ready to challenge for a spot on the roster.

yeah, i would've liked to have seen a pick (maybe a 3rd rounder?) going back to san jose in this deal. Seems like it was rushed... come on dominoes... come on.

Cheechoo for Heatley. I would take it, and I'm a Sens fan.
CapGeek has Schneider's contract at $2.75 which I think is an overpayment. It also means the Canucks have to move more than $2 million in salary. I think Bieksa could be on the move. He managed to play himself out of the top pairing last year, but I think he's still thought highly of around the league.
I really don't know what the Canucks' top six is looking like right now. Salo and Mitchell were great as the top pairing last year, so I imagine that's the same, but what about everyone else?
Mitchell Salo Edler Bieksa (Ohlund was here last year) Ehrhoff Lukowich Extras: Schneider, O'Brian
That's $4 million in cap space in the press box. Something has to give.

It's gonna be Kessel I believe. Boston prolly won't be able to make enough cap room for him. San Jose's best bet will be trading because an offer sheet can potentially be costly. Although, most SJ fans will probably not like the price tag for Kessel which Pavelski fits the bill perfectly for Boston. Top 6 forward with under 2 mill cap hit. Odds are that will be the cheapest route for San Jose, but Pavelski is quite the young player and many who watch him enough know he's very underrated and is quite the talent for the Sharks.

Cheechoo for Heatley: Shark fans would build monuments to Doug Wilson and bow every time he walked by.
Pavelski for Kessel: Shark fans would storm HP Pavilion with torches and pitchforks.

Agreed. 100%, but this is a business and it's either losing a few draft picks that would hurt bad enough if @ least 1 of the few picks pan out to be a stud or worse more than 1 guy pans out or... management takes the fan outrage and deal Pavelski. If I were a Sharks fan I'd be biting my nails because dealing Pavelski for Kessel does qualify as that promised "roster shake up." Guess we will wait and see....
