Who would you rather have in a keeper league where you stand no chance of winning this year?
Quick - Put up great numbers last year in LA, and it looks like he'll be #1 again this year (with Ersberg backing him up). But LA is so deep at G, Quick's job is never a sure thing. Bernier will be leading the charge in Manchester and could definitely take over mid-season, or at least by 2010-11. So is Quick really worthwhile in a keeper league?
Vokoun - Put up numbers that were nearly identical to Quick's, but over more games. Obviously a very trustworthy veteran netminder, and the pressure from behind isn't that great. With Anderson in Colorado, Florida now has Clemmensen, who has proven himself capable, backing up Vokoun. But Clemm won't steal the job unless Vokoun has a real meltdown. And after that, it's just Markstrom, who still needs a few years to develop. That said, Vokoun is 33, and only has a couple good years left before he's over the goalie hill.
Goalie categories in this league are: W, GA, GAA, Svs, Sv%, SO. I will also be carrying Leclaire and Elliott next season.
Your thoughts?

its tough Vokun is a solid high ranking name in FH but has a high cap hit for his numbers. Quick has so much for and against him since he essentailly has to beat out 3 other very high talent guys bernier, ersberg (fukufuji ) to get starts. Since Vokun is kind of a florida franchise mainstay goalie I have to say go with him, a lot of talent but on a really crappy team in a crappy market. Maybe he'll get traded in a few years, in 2011-2012 I think he is ufa Gambling on Quick if he wins the job LA can explode to become somewhere between chicago and st. louis IMO. I think if he gets traded he can compete for # 1 on many teams. Safe bet high cap hit vokun vs. high risk high reward quick low cap hit I think vokun

cap hit is irrelevant... this isn't for the salary cap league. but i guess that doesn't change anything, except to make Vokoun even MORE your favorite?

If you had another strong backstop like Kipper then taking a gamble on quick could be hedged. LeClair and Elliot are pretty high risk themselves. LeClair hasn't proven he can keep a starter role or be consistant and Elliot is unproven and both are on a team that could be horrible for many years. I think depending on quick could burn you bad. At least vokun a more certain shot at strong numbers while ottawa situation pans out. But since Vokuns's age pretty much puts him over the hill by the time your team comes together after some more thought quick is probably the better way to go. If you part with vokun can you at least trade him?

i would hope so. i put quick up on the block early this morning, so we'll see what that brings. but immediately after i posted it, it occurred to me that i might actually want to keep quick over vokoun. that's why i posted over here.
anybody else out there have an opinion?

I like Vokoun better. If your only other goalie is Theodore you'll want a goalie who can make a lot of starts, and Vokoun will probably make more starts. Florida let Anderson go because Vokoun is their franchise goalie, he'll get lots of starts this year.

I'd take Vokoun for two primary reasons:
1. I don't think Quick will ever amount to a true NHL starter. He's a stop-gap.
2. Even though you lose years on Vokoun, his trade value will net you more at the deadline this year or next and you will have a better asset to trade for the goalie you do want.

If you just have Quick, then you might have to carry a fourth goalie to use up all your starts. With Vokoun you can roll with three for most of the year and have an open roster spot.

Welp this is a bit of toss up because Clemmensen is a solid guy to be knocking on Vokoun's door and the Florida coach DeBoer has a rather short leash for his goalies and loves running the "hot" goalie for the time period their streak lasts to and eventually ends. Vokoun can no doubt play and start a lot of games but he's 1 bad start away from losing 5 starts to Clemmensen unless Clemmensen struggles and he will miss 1 start. I also love Vokoun's sv % he has I want to say a top 5 sv % within the last 3 seasons in the NHL amung the NHL's elite... top 10 to be modest not sure if I have the list and that's saying a lot for Vokoun.
Now Quick... This is from my knowledge and scouring for Lombardi/Hextall interviews from before the draft and after the prospects camp and the consensus is Quick is going into training camp as the #1 goalie. Of course his immediate competition is Bernier/Ersberg, but Ersberg will most likely stay the backup because the only reason Bernier will make the team this year is only because Ersberg/Quick faltered big time which is highly doubtful @ this point. They want to ease Bernier in and see if he can put an entire solid season together in the AHL because Bernier was not good in the 1st half because he couldn't get over the fact of "Why the hell am I in Manchester when I made the team last year?" He did play well in the 2nd half but they want Bernier to play but play both halves well so odds are another year in Manchester for him. Also Kings are not making Quick a filler for Bernier. The #1 job is Quick's and Quick's to lose because Lombardi does not label any guy his "future" goaltender because he believes that sets a kid up for failure. You can look into San Jose as an example of what Lombardi may do because it was musical chairs in net because one season no one knew if Nabokov or Toskala was the #1 guy because he was willing to have them rotate and even if one of them did not perform he had Kiprusoff sitting and waiting in the system. Lombardi is gonna let the best goalie win and prove himself.
If I had to make a choice I would say Vokoun is the safer of the 2, but Quick can have an amazing future if he could hold it down this season and prove himself that he's an NHL calibre starter leaguewide. This season is huge for Quick and also for the Kings... I expect him to respond well and take the reigns leading LA back to the playoffs.

Just thought, Zoom posted that there is no chance to win this year so factor that in. Vokun's starts and stats this year and maybe even next are not really helping the cause. My impression is that this decision is between the Vokun and Quick of 2 to 3 years from now.
My reccomendation would be to trade Vokun now while he is still considered by most to be a franchise goalie. If you can get a prospect goalie or skater for him that will be peaking on your rebuild schedule and gamble on quick I think its better overall for the team. Perhaps you can draft Bernier the year it looks like he will come up. By then LA could be a beast.
The thing with Vokun is he is entering his elder years when you'll need him to compete, he is also on a team that lost one of the leauges premeir defenseman, not to mention flordia struggles to compete for the playoffs and has not really done much to change that and in fact could now be in a worse position.
Vokun and Quick this year I think Vokun edges Quick out in most polls but next season and into the future could well be a different story.
