ESPN reports that the Rangers have signe Marion Gaborik. They've always like him but I don't know the Rangers historically fall in love with these guys that are superstars on crutches.

The Rangers are such an odd franchise. They always look so good on paper.....

I really hope Gaborik doesn't become the 2nd coming of Pavel Bure in NYR. Great for 40-50 games or so then injures himself ultimately ending his career... Also in typical Ranger fashion they give him a fat contract no one else in the league was willing to pay anywhere near what they did. I hope it works out for the Rangers but this smells like the fat deals that never panned out... Think the list is quite the impressive one... Lindros, Kovalev, Bure, Holik, Carter, Kasparaitis. I mean Jagr was probably the only that wasn't a debacle.

The Rangers are notorious for over paying for big name stars that come to the big apple and sink like stones. You forgot Gomez, Drury and Redden, the three most recent big name players to fizzle in NY. (Gomez and Drury did alright, but they've played better else where). And wasn't Nylander with the Rangers at one point too?
The Rangers seem like a talent vortex. They take talented players and just suck all the talent out of them. It's got to be a lack of direction or recognition of chemistry. They seem to just throw players together that don't play similar styles and the end result is wasted talent.
I'd hate to be a hockey fan in the state of NY. The Rangers kill talent, and the Islanders give it away before it develops.

don't forget the sabres!
for the record... nylander was in NY for a while, and he was incredible. I guess he's the exception to the rule.

Well Nylander was a perfect example of what Shredded Red is talking about. He was incredible cause he was the perfect kind of player to slot between Jagr and Straka. Then they bring in Drury to take his place (could've kept Nylander for less) and expect him to gel with Jagr just cause his name is better on paper. That's not how it works. Gabby is a great player and the kind of player the Ranger's need, a difference maker. That's what they miss w/o Jagr. But as said the injury risk is quite high. They could've done better with Hossa or in trading for Heatley if it were possible. Of course who could've thought that Chi would give Hossa 12 years.

yeah, the Hawks really just blew everyone out of the water in the Heatley race, I would imagine. I highly doubt anyone would've given more than 8 or MAYBE 10.
the rangers need some serious work. If they can't re-sign Zherdev, and if Korpikoski heads to europe, who's even left?
Higgins-Drury-Gaborik Rissmiller?-Anisimov- Voros-Dubinsky-Callahan Others... Brashear, Avery, Grachev, Pyatt...? Brashear-

Gaborik and Zherdev together might be a nice tandem if they can get Zherdev resigned.
Aside from that, when you look at their line up like that.....they really do look a mess. Their number one line is alright, but it's not great, and their depth past that is pretty weak. Considering Gaborik's injury risk, and his probability of being out of the lineup.....scary to think, but the Rangers don't look much better than the Islanders at this point.

i totally agree.
if they could get a talented LW to play with gabs/drury, that could put higgins on L2 where he probably belongs. A line with rissmiller, higgins, and anisimov could turn out to be a surprise. Then you have voros/dubinsky/avery for L3, and let callahan, pyatt, and brashear trade time on L4.
even still... the atlantic division is going to at its weakest in recent memory, with only pittsburgh and philly looking like sure bets for the playoffs.
