I think this is a case of New Jersey needing to add some experienced depth to their blueline with the hopes of making that deep playoff run. Havelid should get a ton of ice time and is defensively responsible in his own end, can move the puck well, and should be a perfect fit in New Jerseys style of play. Atlanta gets back Anssi Salmela, an offensive defensemen with some upside. Havelid is going to be an UFA at the end of the season, and with rumors of him wanting to go back to Europe to play next season, I think Atlanta did a good job of getting something back for him. And honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Havelid resigned with the Thrashers in the offseason.

Good move on both sides. You can't have too many veteran D-men for a cup run.
Salmela is regarded as a prospect I guess, but he was never drafted and was only signed as a FA this offseason. Good signing by the Devils.

Atlanta gets a decent young defenseman in exchange for a soon to be unrestricted free agent. I've also heard rumors of Havelid possibly returning to europe this summer. The Devils blueline is bolstered and they didn't have to give up anything big.
