I know Scuderi and Whitney are out but what is the deal with Gonchar? Heard he might have a separated shoulder. Any Pens fans have any info?
P.S. Its great to be back on the site. Its hockey season again!!!!!

he got hit hard and late by Koci in the first preseason game... in the first period, no less. Scheduled for an MRI later this week for his left shoulder... yikes.
in the meantime, goligoski and letang are your quick fixes. both are offensively minded defensemen with huge upsides as long as gonchar and whitney are out. Letang should man the point on PP1, and 'Gogo' could see time on the PP as well.

Wow....thats about as much of an impact David Koci will ever be able to claim he had at the NHL level. Taking out one of the best defenseman in the league for an indefinite amount of time. And Koci won't even make the Lightning roster. First Whitney, now Gonchar...tough start for the Pens for sure.

really though, i feel like it could be a lot worse. losing gonchar is big, sure, but letang definitely replaces whitney, and goligoski isn't far behind. the penguins will be in more trouble this year if they start losing forwards. their first line will end up including thomas and cooke

Its not just points the Pens are going to be missing with Whitney and now Gonchar out of the lineup. Gonchar has become one of the best overall defenders in the league...I think the Pens will really struggle without him. Their now without a no. 1 or no. 2 defenseman, heres to hoping both Letang and Goligoski can step it up(for Pens fans I mean)

hopefully the return of Mark Eaton and the emergence of Brooks Orpik as a stud can help balance it out, at least long enough to keep the pens in contention early on.
the other X factor is how well Fleury can play... if the guy brings his A game, the pens defense can be non-existent and they'll still win games. But if he's letting in easy goals, gonchar or no gonchar, they can't win.

it's a big blow. not as big as losing crosby or fleury though. we'll see.
better to have it happen in the preseason like this than in the middle of the season. i feel like then it would be a big blow to their confidence. at least here it'll be like they never had him.

Yahoo has a player note that Pens may push for his return in 2 - 3 weeks. That would put him on the earlier side of the 4-6 month original prognosis.
This news is burried with his very low O-rank in yahoo. Rotoworld also posted a blurb confirming he will see doctors this week for an updated return date. You may be able to beat your leauge to him if he is an FA and stash him on IR.
However I take this news as HIGHLY speculative and there is risk of them bringing him back to soon given their recent troubles.

all signs are pointing to saturday as a likely return. it would make sense... what better time to come back than when your first two games woudl be Toronto and the Isles...

I have a vested interest because hes on my team but I am leaning towards beleiving the Saturday news. Rotoworld has been posting updates about his activitiey with doctors and there have been other news stories about his return very very soon. I think Yahoo is just behind on this one and sticking with earlier projections. It never hurts to be cautios though and there is still a big risk that Pitts is rushing him back given their precarious position in the standings.
