i've noticed lately that the daily visitors has gone down a little. the core posters are still here, and i'm certainly still getting feedback on my posts, but we need to boost the population. therefore, i propose, everyone who posts on any other message board: make a plug for HU. anyone who plays fantasy hockey: make a plug for HU on your website's (yahoo, sportsline, etc) forum. the more the merrier.

I've noticed the same thing Zoom. Not sure if its a coincidence or not, but it seems like the daily traffic here started a downward spiral when Puckhound wasn't able to put up the current lines each day. I think a lot of peeps were just stopping by to view the lines, maybe posting a comment or 2, and then moving on. Now it seems like those guys have stopped using the site all together. Its not anyone's fault, but probably a fact. But I'll be sure to do my part to advertise this awesome hockey resource.

We still have current line updates. yeahhhhhh. but theyre falling behind because nobody sends me their favorite teams lines!! with the time it takes to post a plug somewhere you could check out your teams lines in the last game and send it to me, thus attracting people back!!

I must admit, between about a million different things popping up in my personal life in the last couple months, I've not had the time to come here and post as often as I usually would.
For that, I must extend an apology out to everybody.
However...
There has been some good suggestions here in this thread....and for the record, I'm one for quality of members of quantity anyday. In my opinion, for the most part, we've accomplished that here.
Also, keep in mind as the fantasy season dwindles down, activity dwindles down a bit as well...but it could be a little more active for sure.
Last year, around trade deadline time, business really picked up here(when we were Drop The Puck) so look forward to that again this season.

yeah and playoffs should bring some life. but i'd love to see the non-fantasy topics pick up a lot...friendly conversation and games like the new guy brought in. nonetheless, i'm not goin anywhere.

Definitely that time of year when you've pretty much done everything that you can to try to win your league(s) so people aren't looking for information the way they were just a month ago. The hockey season has less than 30 games left so things will slowly quiet down here. This happens with every fantasy sport. The baseball boards should be the ones picking up traffic now as people look for pre-draft ranking and info. Still a great place for hockey info.

Yeah this place is pretty dead over the summer. Throughout the year it actually reminds me a lot of a college campus. It's busy in the fall, it dies down over the holidays. It dies down in the lulls, which would include right now....you know right before the trade deadline, and midterms....then it picks back up at the trade deadline as soon as midterms are over with.
It's pretty active during the fantasy hockey playoff season, then just playoff talk happens during the NHL playoffs....then everyone goes home for the summer except a select few who stick around just for the hell of it.
My suggestion for more traffic is to incorporate it into other social networking sites. I've often wondered if anyone on here is on MySpace or Facebook. None of us have identities outside of hockey on here so it's pretty impersonal. Not that I mind picturing HHM as an excited Lecavalier, but perhaps if everyone on here was connected by something other than hockey the conversations related to hockey on here would pick up a bit.
In addition to that.....perhaps if we had some banners that we could place in forums on more popular sites like MySpace, or other team oriented forums it may bring more people here in a big way because it would reach a larger audience for a longer period of time.

I don't share many of my fantasy resources with guys in my league, and i think i have a bit of an edge because of that. But I will sign up for the facebook thing, I wonder if we will be able to guess peoples screen names from their real names.

I like the way you think Red...this is exactly the kind of thing we need here. As far as advertising and all that for this site, I'm not really worried about getting a billion people on here or anything like that. That was really never my goal to begin with. All I wanted to do is provide a outlet for people who love the sport of hockey as much as I do to be able to chat it up...we are all pretty big into fantasy hockey, which kinda goes hand in hand...I strongly believe for the most part, I've accomplished my goal. Along the way, shown to us we've met some great people on this site, people who have a genuine interest and love for the game and who can carry a good discussion. I can't stress enough how much I'd rather have a strong, solid core of people here than tons, and tons and tons of members. In the past, I've seen on a few occasions how a board getting "too big" can actually ruin things...so thats not going to happen here. As far as myspace goes, I do have a myspace, I wouldn't be too objected into getting something like that going...a group on myspace or facebook, or both...I have a facebook too or whatever, but it does have anything on it.

I agree that if this board were to get too big it would not be a good thing. There are lots of boards that have a lot of people, but it seems like there's a certain point where people stop responding to peoples posts and only post their own questions because they figure there are so many other people on the boards someone else will respond. So what you end up with is a post with 100 something views but only 2 responses.
That doesn't happen here because there is a pretty solid core group of people that have more of a connection to what is going on, and I'd prefer that as well. My suggestion for the social networking sites was only to gain more activity between existing members. It may bring in a few others, but they would come in already somewhat personalized through MySpace or Facebook. Which wouldn't be bad. So perhaps only doing small things between the existing group members instead of deliberately attempting to branch out for new members would be the best idea.

Zoom Waffles - I guess there are options to increasing the activity on HU besides adding bodies. I do think increased numbers can water down the quality and in fact open the door to stuff we don't want here. I support more activity though - and there are a couple of ways I can see that happening - first, increase the utility of the site to the members - more comprehensive and up to date, injury info, same for current lines, a fantasy hockey strategy section, goalie start projections and so on. That all takes committment and work form someone. Secondly, simply an extra effort from the core members to not only respond to other posts but to initiate topical posts as well. Again committment and effort.
I think if the quality is here then people will always return and get involved if they want to. I think if our core group simply focuses on participating and contributing in a quality way - things will be just fine.

I do my best to update the injury info at least once daily, but often times information gets deleted after a day or so because of message size constraints. I agree with the others here, more people means more watered down information and a lesser site. We need better participation, not just more of it.

I noticed your committment to the injury stuff Inuyasha - take a look at this link if you already haven't - I kinda like the approach they take - don't know if we can do something similar here - but it does a nice job of giving an update at a scrolling glance instead of opening and closing threads. I especially like that it is time and date stamped clearly. fantasygames.sandboxplus.com/2005/news/content/injuries.asp?sport=NHL

Right now, the format I use is brand new news is italicized, the 2nd day it is in regular print then deleted. Unfortunately, my hands are tied with some of the things I can do(such as give time stamps and name of source) because of the 25 MB message size restrictions. If we can figure out a way to implement more into the report, I am always open to suggestions.

Don't get me wrong - the stuff you are doing is great for the site in terms of providing a source of information. Keep it going - I was just wondering about a tweak. I know what you mean about space constraints - I still suffer from too little room in the signature - but I see how others seem to find a way to get a lot more info in theirs.

Shoeless <<<<<< very red face
I have been completely missing this injury thing you have been doing - wow!!! What a resource.
I have to admit to something here - I tend to skip the stickies stuff in the forums - I wonder if anyone else does the same thing and if they do maybe we could put this report and the line combos report as stand alone, non-debated as a discussion thread
They certainly stand out as resources which are worthy of a special spot in the HU line-up

Although I am just honored that my efforts were good enough to land my report in the Hockey Resources drag down menu.

Not sure what I am suggesting HHM - I think unique and valuable reports should stand out and stand alone - no touchy by others - read no comments threads along with the report. That can be done in the regular forum sections.
When I come into HU I would like to be able to click on the Injury report and see nothing else but that report - same with line combinations. Clean and simple

thats what the drop down menu is for at the top. but a lot of people dont know thats there. Zoom pretty much said it best for me here...although in the future, anything can change. The drop down menus, to me, are great and make getting to things much easier. This site is actually my homepage, and every morning I start the day off by going to the Hockey resources section. The line combos, the injury page, the nhl standings, the nhl highlights machine and spector's hockey are my daily ritual.
